Blackdown Ridge ls located on the Surrey / Sussex borders, in Lurgashall near Haslemere – 440 feet above sea level in the Sussex Weald, enjoying extraordinary views over the South Downs National Park.

The wines of Blackdown Ridge Estate are the result of the vision of owner, Professor Martin Cook, who has lived on the estate for 25 years. A passionate wine-lover, Martin was inspired to create his vineyard when an Italian family friend and winemaker, Antonio, suggested that the beautiful, serene south-facing slopes of Blackdown would be perfect for growing vines.

Antonio’s words inspired Martin to realise the potential of the estate and the first vines were planted in 2010. The soil of the Sussex Weald shares much with the terroir of the Champagne region of France, and this influenced the plantings of the classic sparkling wine varietals: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.

The grapes planted for their range of still wines include the aromatic Bacchus for the single varietal English white wine, Triomphe and more recently, Sauvignon Blanc.

Lucinda Colucci – Business Development Manager – joined the company in 2016 as Business Development Manager, never having worked in the wine industry before. She had previously worked for the Professor Martin Cook within the NHS for 8 years. Lucinda loves new challenges and so therefore couldn’t resist opportunity – NHS or vineyard? She hasn’t regretted it for a moment ever since. The last year particularly, has been a huge learning curve, having been left to oversee the entire show including winemaking!

For a small vineyard, of just 10.5 acres, Blackdown Ridge is unusual in that they have their own winery producing national and international award-winning wines – Triomphe, – the most beautifully smooth red wine, a crisp dry Sauvignon Blanc and a still rosé which is perfect for the summer ahead. They also have a fantastic classic cuvée called Primordia, and a gorgeous sparkling Rosé both perfect for the long awaited gatherings with loved ones ahead.

The 10.5 acres of land are currently planted to vines which are nurtured throughout the growing year with an environmentally sensitive philosophy to viticulture that ensures optimum ripeness, yield and fruit quality. Taking a minimal intervention approach allows the land and therefore the vines to flourish and grow.

We totally loved what they said to us:

We have all had our challenges over the last year, and often at the end of the day a glass of wine has been our sanity. We believe that our customers are enjoying drinking less but drinking better and are also enjoying exploring the wines of Britain. Why transport wines from around the world when we have beautiful wines created here on our doorsteps – better for the planet, better for us and better for our customers. We love our customers to visit us for a tour and tasting to experience this beautiful hidden gem for themselves.

Primordia is their flagship product. Having been chosen by Masters of Wine in an International Wines and Spirits Challenge for an outstanding silver award, and loved by customers both young and old, they think (so do we!) that you will find this wine to be a delightful pleaser for any occasion!

Lucinda suggested pairing this delicious fizz with a dish that she learned from her Italian mother-in-law, Spicy Clam & Kale Linguine, yummy!

Their elegant feather branding looks fabulous on any celebration table, it is a symbol of the peace and balance and harmony at Blackdown Ridge.

‘Each year, as the grapes arrive at the winery a careful blend of science and magic begins. We have just one chance to get this right!’

Check out the Blackdown Ridge Storefront where you can have a look – or even buy some of their delicious wines!

There are more species of organisms in the soil than there are aboveground, we need to respect this delicate balance whilst we are temporary custodians of this land at Blackdown Ridge.
